Lasix (Furosemide) is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid (water) from the body. Furosemide is effective alone or in combination with other high blood pressure medications. Diuretics help your body produce and eliminate more urine, which helps lower blood pressure.
Furosemide is a loop diuretic. Loop diuretics make the kidneys eliminate larger amounts of electrolytes (especially sodium and potassium salts) and water than normal (diuretic effect). Loop diuretics are useful for treating many conditions in which salt and water retention is a problem.
Some medicines may interact with Furosemide. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Chloral hydrate because side effects, such as excessive sweating, rapid heart beat, and changes in blood pressure, may occur. It is known that lithium side effects may be increased by Furosemide. Furosemide may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Furosemide.
