Oseltamivir is an antiviral drug that is active against both influenza type A and influenza type B viruses. It is used to prevent and to treat some kinds of influenza or the flu. Tamiflu can prevent the flu as long as you continue taking this medication, but getting a yearly flu shot is still the best way of avoiding the disease entirely.
Oseltamivir works to injure the virus and fight the infection. This medicine should be started within 2 days of flu symptoms (fever, cough, headache, feeling tired, muscular weakness, sore throat). Give this medicine with or without food. Give with food if it causes an upset stomach. A liquid is available if your child cannot swallow pills. Shake well before use.
People with the flu, particularly children and adolescents, may be at an increased risk of self injury and confusion shortly after taking TAMIFLU and should be closely monitored for signs of unusual behavior. A healthcare professional should be contacted immediately if the patient taking TAMIFLU shows any signs of unusual behavior. If you develop an allergic reaction or a severe rash, stop taking Tamiflu and contact your healthcare professional immediately, as it may be very serious. The most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting.
